2021 Online Fursuit Dance Competition

Submission deadline: Saturday March 6th, 2021 at 11:59 PM ET

Live broadcast: Sunday March 21st, 2021

Location: YouTube Livestream

With the cancellation of Furnal Equinox 2021’s in-person event due to the ongoing global pandemic, we have decided to follow in the footsteps of other conventions and host an online fursuit dance competition. As the format will be different than what you may be expecting, please read all the rules carefully to ensure you’re not missing anything!

Summary of Competition

All video submissions must feature you performing an original dance performance up to two minutes. Your fursuit can either be a fullsuit, which covers your entire body, or a partial — this would consist of wearing a tail and covering your head, hands, and feet at the minimum.

Your video should be completed and uploaded through our sign up form by March 6th, 2021. For the best viewing experience for both the judges and the audience, please capture your entire body in the video, and edit the video to overlay your song over the video. This way the audio will be high quality and easier to hear without any disruptive noises or feedback.

All aspects of the dance competition are PG-13, which means you’ll need to ensure your song is broadcast-friendly (no swearing or vulgarity), and your costume and/or clothing do not display any profanity. You should also minimize any “skin” exposure to help preserve the costumed performance element.

Solo and group categories will be combined into the same competition due to the streamlined nature of the online dance competition, and past entries. Solo performers and groups will submit using the same form, and there are no age restrictions.

While this is a competition, remember to enter with a mindset of having fun and cheering on your fellow dancers. Even if you don’t make place in the top scores, everyone’s a winner in the end — we’re all here to have a good time and put on an amazing performance for our online audience!

Competition Format & Process

For the online format, all contestants will upload and submit a video of themselves dancing to their desired song or mix. The deadline to submit the video is on Saturday March 6th, 2021 at 11:59 PM ET – videos and/or online forms submitted after that will not be accepted. A panel of chosen judges will be reviewing all submissions and informing the competitors who have qualified through e-mail. If you are ready to sign up and submit, click the button at the bottom of this page to go to the form.

Your video submission should be:

  • Uploaded using our Dropbox upload link, located in the sign-up form
  • No longer than 2:00 in length, and no larger than 200 MB file size
  • Submitted in a standard video file format such as MP4, MOV, FLV, or WMV
  • Already edited so your song/mix is the only audio in the video, so we can hear it clearly – if you do not know how to edit your video to achieve this, search up online tutorials for help or ask a friend!

The video submitted will be used for both the pre-selection process, as well as the main event. This means that you will only be submitting one video, which will be broadcasted in our livestream show if you are qualified, where a panel of judges will provide feedback on the performances. We encourage all entrants to tune into the live show and see the amazing pool of talent.

As a reference, here are some of the things that judges may be looking for:

  • Originality: Unique and/or interesting moves, avoiding repetition
  • Musicality: Movements/groove matches with music, moving with the beat/rhythm
  • Execution: Clean movements, no stumbling or sloppy moves, moves flow together
  • Character: Adds character/flavour to movements, brings life to the dance
  • Cinematography: Does the filming, camerawork and setting improve the performance?

At the end of the competition, the judges will tally up the points and announce the Top 3, along with any honourable mentions.

Costume Guidelines

Acceptable entries are:

  • Full fursuits (A.K.A. “fullsuits”)
  • Halfsuits/Partial suits (head + paws + tail + FEETPAWS minimum)
  • Please note: heels, slippers, sneakers are not acceptable replacements for feetpaws. This is a new rule in effect so that all competitors are able to perform on a more equal ground. If you do not have feetpaws for your suit, try asking around to borrow some.

Non-acceptable entries are:

  • Zentai suits
  • One-piece PJ’s/kigurumis
  • Tail/ear combinations

Props may be used at your own discretion. We ask that you use your props (if you have any) in a safe and PG manner, as with everything else in your video performance. If you have questions about using a prop, please contact the organizer at ronnie@furnalequinox.com
